火は勘弁してください！

 In the last post, I used the phrase "come under the fire." If you say that you come under fire, you mean that you're strongly critisized by someone. You can also use the expression "take (get) flak" as the same meaning. 

昨日の記事で、"come under fire"という表現を使いました。強く非難されることを意味します。"take (get) flak"という表現も同じ意味で使えます。

Example:  Will Smith got a lot of flak for slapping Chris Rock.

 This morning, I saw this news article about Beyoncé removing an ableist slur from one of her new songs called "Heated." What is ableist slur? It's discriminatory words against people with disabilities. According to the article, Beyoncé has come under fire for using the word "spaz" in the song. It's popular slang - and it means going crazy. It actually comes from the word "spastic," which refers to somone who has cerebral palsy. Here's what's on my mind: Don't cancel Beyoncé. She has admitted that she had no intention to hurt somebody. Having said that, there are people who get hurt hearing the very word, whether intentionally or unintentionally. I hope that every single one of us take this as an opportunity to think about the way we treat people with disabilities. 

今朝、ビヨンセがニュースになっていたので、その記事を読みました。彼女の新曲『Heated』に、"spaz"という単語が入っている。それが、障害者に対する差別的表現を含んでいるので、歌詞から外すという内容でした。"spaz"は、アメリカで頻繁に耳にするスラングです。「我を忘れる」という意味があります。元々、"spastic"（「痙性麻痺がある人」の意）という言葉から来ていて、脳性麻痺を持って生まれた方を指す単語です。私が考えるのはこうです。「ビヨンセをキャンセルしないで」。本人も認めていますが、誰かを傷つける意図はなかった。とは言え、それが意図的であろうとなかろうと、その言葉を聞いて傷つく人がいることも事実です。この出来事を大切な機会と捉え、日ごろ障害者にどう接しているのかを、私たち一人ひとりが考えられたらと願っています。

「日陰を投げつける」って何だ？！（かんたんな英文付き）

 The word "diss" has become standard Japanese. As you might know, "dissing" means to insult someone publicly. In English-speaking countries, many people are using the phrase "throw shade" recently - and it has the same meaning as "dissing." 

Example: She's throwing shade at you because she's jealous of your success. 

             （彼女がディスってくるのは、あなたの成功を妬んでるから）

Apparently, "throwing shade" originally means to subtly insult someone. So if you throw shade at someone, they don't immediately notice that they have been insulted. It's quite different from the way people use the phrase today. Interesting, isn't it?

「ディスる」という言葉は、今では、れっきとした日本語です。ご存知かもしれませんが、おおっぴらに人を侮辱することを、ディスると言うわけです。英語圏では、"throw shade"という表現が、ここ最近、頻繁に使われています。「ディスる」と同じ意味なんです。

 聞くところによれば、元々、"throw shade"はやんわりと相手を侮辱することを意味するといいます。人から何か言われても、侮辱されたとはすぐに気づかない。そういった類のディスり方なんだそうです。本来の意味とは、かなり違っていますよね。何だかおもしろいですね。

どっかへ行ってくれないかなぁ・・・

 I feel like I keep talking about this hellish weather all the time. For the couple of days, I've been disgustingly sweaty, and I've had trouble sleeping at night. I've had enough! I want to tell this summer weather to go away.

 最近、この地獄のような天気のことばかり話しているような気がします。ここ2～3日、汗でべとついて気持ちがわるいし、夜だってろくすっぽ眠れやしません。もううんざりです！天気に向かって「あっち行け！」なんて言ってみたいものです。

 There are some ways to say "Go away!" by the way.

 「どっか行け！」を意味する表現が、英語にはいくつかあります。

• Get lost!
• Take a hike! 
• F**k off!
• Get outta (out of) here!  

  We've got to go somewhere cooler before we all melt away.

  暑さで溶けてしまう前に、どこか涼しいところへ逃げなくちゃ！

天気の下にいる？！

　It's too hot and humid today, isn't it? Some of you might not be feeling well with this weather. If you say that you're under the weather, you mean that you feel a bit sick. 

　今日は暑くて、ムシムシしてますね。こんな天気だと、体調を崩している方もいらっしゃるでしょう。「体調がすぐれない」を表す英語は、"under the weather"です。

例）

・ I'm afraid I can't go out with you, because I'm feeling under the weather. 

（一緒に出かけられそうにないな、すこし具合が悪いんだ）

・I think you should go home if you're under the weather.

（体調が悪ければ、帰ったほうがいいよ）

 Get plenty of rest if you're feeling under the weather. Get well soon!

みんな太陽の下にいます！

 Summertime is here, which means that the sunshine is in full swing. I normally don't pay much attention to the sun, but in summer, I feel that the sun is certainly above us - and that we're living under the sun. 

 夏ですね。日差しも本気モードです。日ごろ、太陽の存在をあまり意識することはあまりないけれど、夏だけは別ですね。頭上にはたしかに太陽があること、そして、私たちが太陽のもとで生活していることを、これほどまでに感じるのも夏ならではです。

 The idiom "under the sun" is what you often hear in daily coversation. It means: on earth, in the world. 

 "under the sun"というイディオムは、日常会話でよく耳にします。「地球上で」、「世界中で」という意味です。

 例）

　・Harry Styles is the hottest person under the sun. 

    （ハリー・スタイルズは、地球上で一番魅力的な存在だ）

　・I tried everything under the sun, but I couldn't get a record deal.

    （あらゆることに手を出したけれど、レコード契約にはこぎつけなかった）

"YA"が私を英語沼にひきずりこんだ！

The word "ya" is what got me into learning English. "Ya" is the informal way of saying "you", and it's spelled the way it's oftentimes spoken in casual conversation. I was thirteen when I first found that word. I looked it up in the dictionary, and it was not in there. It was quite a surprise. I never knew there were words that you can't find in the dictionary. I talked to my mother and told her about it. And she said, "It's slang, I guess." SLANG?! WHAT THE HECK IS THAT?! I went to the library and picked up this dictionary called "Slang Dictionary." There it is! I finally found it! That was the moment I realized that lanugage was alive - and I found it interesting. Since then, I've been passionate about learning English. To be precise, I've been passionate about picking up the new slang from rap music. It's a way of being updated with the latest pop culture, and I love it. 

英語を勉強するきっかけになったのは、"ya"という単語です。"Ya"というのは、"you"をくずした言い方です。日常会話で発音される通りを、その綴りに反映しています。この単語に出会ったのは、13歳のとき。辞書で調べたけれど、載っていなかった。これには驚きました。辞書に載っていない単語がまさか存在するなんて。事の顛末を母に話すと、こんな答えが返ってきたのです。「それは、スラングじゃない？」スラング？！それ何？！さっそく私は図書館に足を運んで、「スラング辞典」を棚から引っこ抜きました。あった！やっと見つけた！言葉は生きている、ということに気付いたのは、まさにこのときでした。おもしろいと思いましたね。それからというもの、熱心に英語を学習しています。いや、正確に言えば、ラップから新しいスラングを習得することに熱を上げている、でしょう。スラングは、最新のポップカルチャーにいつでもアクセスできる道具のようなものです。大好きですね。
